SIGNBOARD CHALLENGES
To inform lake visitors about the Thalangama Environmental Protection Area (EPA), and the rules to follow there, official signboards give us important backing. Unfortunately, those with direct sun exposure either lost their text or became hardto read.
Dear Departments of Irrigation, Wildlife Conservation, and CEA, please replace the unreadable boards that we can actually prove that the area is protected and easier assist you in our common conservation efforts. Aside anti-littering signs, we need in particular signboards against noise pollution from tuned motorcycles and trishaws with large inbuilt speakers. Thanks!
This signboard is very important for the lake area where the local community and the rich biodiversity are increasingly disturbed by noise pollution from racing motorcycles with an aggressive, throaty sound, or young (often drunk) folks connecting their phones to larger portable (or trishaw inbuilt) Bluetooth speakers to “entertain” the whole area.
Car washing is very common at this place and all tire and road wear particles, including oil and microplastics go straight into the irrigation water of the paddy fields and our food. How to argue with the trishaw, truck, or car owners if the signboards are blank?!
These are the only two CEA signboards stating that the lake area is protected. The one at the Averihena lake lost already most of its text due to sun exposure.
